Sea Doo handlebars

Repaint handlebars

Sea Doo GTI

The plastic thingy on the handlebars looks like crap. Is it really supposed to be painted, or is this something the PO did? In any case, since the thingy is soft plastic and pliable, everytime you push on it, chunks of the paint flake off.

First thing, remove the thingy. I believe there are only 4 screws holding it on; one screw on each side, and 2 screws at the base. Then by squeezing and pushing, you can remove it from the handlebars.

Once removed, I used a flat screw driver to scrap off the remaining paint. No sense putting pain on that old stuff. If the old stuff won't hold, then painting it won't get us anywhere. So, scrap and scrap and scrap.

I figured paint would not work, as it is not flexible. But I found this Plasti Dip Spray can at the local hardware store. So, I sprayed a couple of coats on the thingy, and put it back on the GTI.

So, here is the finished product. Looked good enough that I did the yellow ski too. Unfortunately, it's not very durable. Each time we use the ski, some of the paint rubs off. Easy to fix, but not very permanent.

The 2010 season is over. And I'd say this project was a complete failure. The rubber-paint rubs off very easily. So any friction rubs off the paint and reveals the cruddy looking plastic covers. True, it's easy enough to simply spray on some more paint (and I did that several times this summer), but it's only temporary. I guess I'll need to find some plastic replacements, or just live with it.
